Beijing Modern Dance Company

The first time I see one of their choreographed dances is in Beijing's “Egg”, as the National Center for Performing Arts is popularly referred to. It really does look like an egg, floating on the water. I ask Gao Yanjinzi, the choreographer some time later if she would allow me to portrait the company. She replies that if I have sought them out “then there is nothing to be said against it, this is yuanfen”. Much can be explained in China with this word, meaning something like “fate” or “providence”.

Gao Yanjinzi combines traditional Chinese elements with modern dance. Like so many things in China, it is a balancing act.

Selected Photographs were shown in exhibitions in China, Hongkong and Europe.
